Cruiser crash lands 2 in hospital

A speeding police car answering an emergency call careened off a station wagon and then crashed into a bank entrance yesterday, losing a front wheel and back windshield in the process.

“Both drivers are in hospital,” said Toronto police Insp. Anil Anand, who described the injuries as minor because of seatbelts and air bags.

Both cars were travelling westbound on Queen Street East toward Woodbine Avenue at around 7:20 a.m., Anand said.

The officer declined further details but a friend of the female station wagon driver pieced together the scene. The friend, who asked to remain unnamed, said he understood the cruiser to be passing the station wagon in the oncoming lane. At Woodbine, the station wagon began a left turn.

The cruiser hit the station wagon, sending it crashing into a traffic light post on the driver’s side and causing the cruiser to leap the southwest curb of the intersection in front of the HSBC bank.

Anand said he had no information on whether the cruiser’s siren or flashing lights were on at the time.
