More than 260,000 tourists on 127 ships visited Halifax during the 2010 cruise season, according to numbers released by Port of Halifax yesterday.

The port authority estimated the economic impact of the 2010 season to be $50 million — including passenger, crew and cruise line spending in the Halifax area.

Destination Halifax, a provincially and municipally funded tourism promoter, estimated eight per cent of all tourists visiting Halifax arrive on cruise ships. Patricia Lyall, DH president, attributed the performance to a Halifax experience “rooted in authenticity,” starting when visitors arrive at the brand-new Cruise Pavilion.
