Cue Oshawa, Detroit Rock City is dead

The only thing missing from Sean Shane’s massive collection of KISS memorabilia is a Gene Simmons axe bass, autographed by the tongue-wagging rock god himself.

Shane sold it as a teenager. He needed money to repair his car, which he used to deliver pizzas around Oshawa’s then-vibrant downtown. Shane, however, has found a solution that combines his passion for KISS with his passion for Oshawa. Last week Shane covered his car with an enormous decal of Gene Simmons’s face, flames and the words “Vote for KISS in Oshawa.”

The band is asking fans to vote where KISS will play this fall, as part of their tour. The crusade is paying off: Oshawa has soared into first place in all of North America, just ahead of Winnipeg. The concert would be a much needed boost to a community reeling from auto industry cuts. Votes will be counted next week.
