Cyclists injured in head-on bike path collision

Two riders suffered head injuries after colliding on a bike path early Monday morning near the Calgary Zoo, police said.

Emergency crews were called out around 4:40 a.m. to the bike path under the footbridge near the Calgary Zoo and St. Georges Island.

According to police, both riders, who were males between 40 to 50 years old, were travelling towards each other at a high rate of speed when they came to a sharp curve in the path at the same time and collided head on.

One rider suffered a minor concussion, police said, and the second suffered a broken jaw. Both were taken to hospital, and at first one of the riders was believed to be in life-threatening condition, but has since been upgraded to stable, police said.

Police said neither rider had lights on their bikes, nor were they wearing helmets.
