Dance till you drop this weekend at Mustard Seed mission fundraiser

Calgarians will have a chance to show off their moves this weekend, but quantity beats out quality in a fundraiser for a city organization.

Those who think they can dance for a really long time are invited to dance from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Eau Claire Market on May 15. The contest is open to dancers of all skill levels and all ages, and dancers will collect pledges to raise money for the Mustard Seed Street Ministry.

Kayla Thompson and her sister developed the idea and then entered a contest to plan the charity’s latest fundraiser.

Thompson, 21, said the pair heard about the contest through a friend and thought it would be a great opportunity to get some experience in event planning while helping a worthy cause. “I’m kind of just doing things on my own, but I see it evolving into an event planning business,” said Thompson.

The Seed plans on putting on a big show for the dancers. “If you come down and dance we have refreshments, prizes, performances, pretty much everything that you can imagine,” said Sarah Mckenzie, who is in charge of community engagement at the Mustard Seed.

Thompson said there will also be cheerleaders and dance studios there to pump up the crowd — and they may just discover some hidden talent.
