Dartmouth apartment fire leaves dozens homeless

Dozens of residents were left homeless Thursday night after fire ripped through an apartment building in Dartmouth.

Fire fighters were called to a blaze at 50 Roleika Dr. around 7:40 p.m., said Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Service Acting Platoon Chief Pat Keating.

Upon arrival, Keating said firefighters faced a blaze on two floors.

“There was a considerable volume of fire on the second and third floors,” he said. “It started on the second floor. We do not know the cause.”

It took firefighters about an hour to get the blaze under control, he said. The apartment suffered extensive damage and the cause is under investigation.

Keating said the Red Cross was on scene to help find a place to sleep for displaced residents. Metro Transit buses were also at the scene to assist.
