Date for transit GPS launch still up in air

Officials at Metro Transit still don’t know when GPS systems will be installed on the fleet, three years after the new system was announced.

Metro Transit spokeswoman Lori Patterson said the GPS project was currently in the “final testing” stages. But she couldn’t provide any more of a status update than that.

“They were in the final testing, until they get it running on all the buses … then we will kind of re-launch it accordingly,” she said.

Metro Transit first touted the installation of GPS trackers to replace the oft unreliable GoTime service in 2007. Back then, the system was expected to be launched that fall.

A series of delays, including fleet expansion and other capital initiatives, pushed back the plans.

Patterson told Metro in March that the fall 2010 launch would be contingent on whether the system was working up to standards.

She could not provide a specific date for the launch. She did say, however, that the project is on pace for sometime in the fall.
