TORONTO – Canadian director David Cronenberg is adapting Don DeLillo’s provocative novel “Cosmopolis” for the big screen.

Cronenberg’s Toronto office says the acclaimed filmmaker has just begun writing a screenplay based on the book and is in talks to direct.

The 2003 novel follows the self-made tycoon Eric Packer as he tries to cross Manhattan in a stretch limo, navigating business deals, chance meetings, sex and violence along the way.

Cronenberg is in talks with the Paris-based production house Alfama Films about a possible co-production with his Toronto company, Antenna Ltd.

Meanwhile, Cronenberg is also in the midst of adapting Robert Ludlum’s spy novel, “The Matarese Circle,” for the big screen.

Known for helming such disturbing horror films as “Scanners,” “Dead Ringers,” and “The Fly,” Cronenberg’s most recent work has involved more mainstream thrillers, including “Eastern Promises” and “A History of Violence.”
