Day of remembrance for Montreal Massacre

The City of Ottawa will mark the 20th anniversary of the infamous shooting at École Polytechnique Dec. 6.

Mayor Larry O’Brien, who yesterday declared the city will observe that day as the École Polytechnique Day of Remembrance, said it is “a day when Canadians think about the women for whom violence is a daily reality and a day to remember those who have died as a result of gender-based violence.”

In 1989, Marc Lepine shot and killed 14 women and injured 10 more at the Montreal school.

The Women’s Event Network will also be holding a 20th anniversary vigil at the women’s monument at Minto Park at 6 p.m. on Dec. 6.

The Ottawa Coalition to End Violence Against Women’s Erin Williams said the group is also launching Tell 20, a campaign urging citizens to tell 20 other people about the anniversary and how violence against women affects their community.
