It happened … again. After reading blog entries about a highly anticipated restaurant in Gastown being open I raced down only to find it’s still closed. No working phone number, mostly inactive Twitter account and a blank website.

Thank goodness for a port in a storm. Deacon’s Corner is tucked away so neatly you can barely find it, but look hard and you’ll be rewarded.

The decor reflects a traditional diner in Gastown and the service is a perfect balance of friendly and fast, fast, fast. All-day breakfasts are what Deacon is built on, like the sausage and biscuit ($9.50). Creamy country gravy covers biscuits and spicy sausage, all house made. Perfectly browned crisp hashbrowns come on the side. It’s surprisingly greaseless. The English breakfast tea ($2) comes in teapots usually reserved for Chinese restaurants, which servers ensure is always filled with hot water. There’s also Chinese candy at the cash register, little nods to the neighbourhood next door.

Great food, fabulous service and perfect atmosphere make Deacon’s Corner a sure thing.
