Dead body found on city street

Investigators are saying very little about a bloody find made by passersby in the middle of a busy city road 30 minutes before midnight on New Year’s Eve.

A young man was found dead in the middle of the road on 51 Avenue west of 106 Street sometime before 11:30 p.m. when police arrived on the scene, say city cops.

When paramedics arrived, police say the man was found with a large wound in the chest area, but an autopsy has yet to rule whether the man was a victim of foul play.

“We don’t know what the circumstances are that led up to it, but it appears the male was 18 to 20 years of age,” Insp. Greg Alcorn told reporters.

Alcorn confirmed police know the man’s identity through identification he was carrying in his wallet, but said he couldn’t release the man’s name since next of kin hadn’t been contacted.

Homicide investigators believe the man was seen inside a Petro-Canada gas station nearby in the neighbourhood, which is full of walk-up apartment buildings and shopping complexes, including the Southgate Shopping Centre.

Alcorn said police have seized surveillance footage from the gas station, which police blocked off overnight as they searched for evidence.
