A domino tournament at a southeast community centre turned deadly yesterday morning after a man was allegedly stabbed.
Police were called to a weapons complaint at the Penbrooke Community Association in the 6100 block of Penbrooke Drive SE and upon arrival learned a male, 25 to 30 years old, was being transported to hospital, where he later died from his injuries, said police.
Jimmy Brown, one of the chefs working the event, said a domino tournament was taking place at the hall when a group of people entered, an altercation ensued and then the victim was allegedly stabbed.
According to Brown, the victim’s name was Bloco, and he was a DJ working the event.
Brown said that there were about 80 people in the hall at the time of the attack, and he believed the victim was stabbed as he saw the wound and did not hear a gunshot.
“(Bloco) was always a nice guy to me, I don’t have anything bad to say about him,” said Brown.
Tom Smith, who lives across the street from the community centre, was shaken by the incident.
“My mother started her part-time job cleaning the community hall after the events, and she was right in the middle of the parking lot when it happened,” said Smith. “It definitely makes me question if I want to stay in the area.”
Police said it’s unknown if the death is gang-related.
An autopsy will be completed tomorrow, according to police.
