Decision on school damaged by fire expected today

The Edmonton Catholic School District will determine today if fire-damaged Annunciation Elementary School will be ready to open for the first day of classes.

The school suffered $250,000 in damage Sunday night when a daycare inside went up in flames.

“It is a race against time,” said Lori Nagy, Edmonton Catholic Schools spokeswoman. “There’s so much to do and we’re just hopeful we can complete everything.”

In the event the school is not ready, officials are considering options that include delaying the opening for a day or two, or even busing 220 students to a different school.

If all goes as planned, school will open Sept. 2.
