Decor trends for fall and winter

Although trends come and go, I see this fall’s decor trends as a welcoming sign of casual comfort, high quality and a return to a better quality of life. It’s like a well edited wardrobe; fewer pieces but all of remarkable quality and stability.

Vintage accents
French-burlap and linen is being utilized for chic pillows printed with a vintage stamped design and accent chairs are covered in humble grey linen fabric. Vintage replica lamps made of brass and milk glass are making a comeback as something new and fresh.

Tip: I like this trend look for a guest bedroom; it’s casual and vintage is always comforting.

Wallpaper is back
Wallpaper is making a comeback in a big and decidedly fashionable way. From bright and bold to subdued and elegant, today’s wallpapers are easy to apply and even easier to remove, making updating the seasonal look of a room easier than ever before. Luxurious touches like gold gilt, crystals and velvet are all the rage in a jazzier setting.

Tip: If you are nervous about adding a print to the walls then choose a tone-on-tone print which will be much more subtle.

Whatever Art
Art doesn’t have to be expensive but it should certainly have meaning. Buy what you like and don’t be afraid to mix oil, pastel, black-and-white photography; the more you mix the more travelled and cultured you will look. Vintage maps, old road signs, antique phtotgraphy; it all goes as long as it has meaning!

Tip: To add depth and character to your pieces, forego the glass cover that can be distracting and casts a glare that actually detracts from the art.

Burst of Colour
While grey neutrals are still very popular this year for elements like paint colours and upholstered furnishings, coloured accent pieces give a space visual interest and appeal. Brightly coloured and/or patterned pillows, rugs and other accessories will bring an otherwise bland space to life.

Window Treatments
While many love luscious fabrics, an overuse of material on your windows can quickly overpower an otherwise streamlined room. Linen panels are now very trendy since they beautifully outline and soften windows. Silk has made its way back on windows but holds a simpler demeanour than the ruffled silk drapes from the past.

Tip: Adding simple matchstick blinds under drapery panels will mix the rich with the humble — a hot look at this moment.

Rug Rage
There has never been a more exciting time for rugs; whatever style, shape, and design you can imagine is available. Natural animal prints and ultra-bright fashion colours are the two big looks right now.

Tip: A rug is considered an accent to the room so follow suit with other accents when looking for inspiration.
