As fire trucks and police cars from Canada and the United States escorted his body across the border yesterday, Burlington co-workers were planning “full firefighter’s funeral” for fallen comrade Wayne Topping.

Topping, 45, died of an apparent heart attack Friday morning while taking part in the 30-team International Extrication Challenge in Indianapolis. “He was very dedicated person to the department and his family,” said Burlington Fire Chief Steve Thurlow yesterday. “He loved the fire service and he put 110 per cent into it all the time.”

Topping joined the Burlington Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter in 1998 and landed a full-time job in 2000.
