Halifax City Pacifico has no problem with the ups and downs of the summer — as long as it ends on a high.
Pacifico got back in the win column on the weekend with a pair of victories, including yesterday’s 1-0 triumph over Dartmouth United Super City Windows in Nova Scotia Soccer League Premiership action at Huskies Stadium.
Last year’s Canadian senior women’s soccer champions had lost two of their past four games, but still have a 9-4 overall record and sit second in the league standings.
“We’ve lost a few games but I always think it’s good to lose a few games during the regular season,” City’s Katie Prowse said. “When we’ve played well, we’ve come out with wins, so it’s been a good summer overall so far.”
Prowse, a former Golden Boot winner, was the game’s lone scorer yesterday with her fifth of the year, while Robyn Homans recorded her fifth clean sheet of the summer.
City has spent the summer adjusting to a number of roster changes. Notably, they’ve had to deal with the loss of veteran NSSL star and goal-scoring ace Mary-Beth Bowie.
“It’s always a bit of an adjustment when you get new players, but all the girls who have come in have worked really hard and earned their spots,” Prowse said. “They’re doing great.”
Not helping matters is the fact that top goal-scorer, Eunnie Kim, is leaving to join the NCAA Michigan Wolverines next week. But on the flip side, teenaged Lower Sackville star Nkem Ezurike will join the fold after the Canada Games.
“Hopefully it will balance out,” Prowse said.
With four games to go, City is hoping to catch Halifax Dunbrack Rooms Plus (10-4-1) for first place and a direct bye to the provincial final. If not, the club can draw on last year’s experience of winning just seven games all summer and still rising to the occasion at provincials and nationals.
“We lost some games last year as well and we won it all,” Prowse said. “Hopefully we can do the same thing again.”
