Friends who have lived in southern India swear by the dosas — crispy crepes that are a staple in the region — at Southern Spice.
The classic madras masala dosa ($6 on Wednesdays and Thursdays) is folded over delicious spiced potatoes and served on a large tray with sambar (a lentil soup), and two chutneys.
The prawn dosa ($10.95) is worth trying with plump seafood and masala, which means mixed spices.
Dosas are a great option for vegetarians and those with gluten or wheat allergies as they’re made with ground rice and lentils.
An appetizer called Chicken 65 has also been transported here from south India. The best spicy chicken nuggets you’ll ever taste, it’s unclear if it’s named after the number of ingredients or its original price of 65 rupees.
Southern Spice also offers a weekday lunch buffet ($10.95) but judging by the dosa trays in front of everyone, it’s not the main highlight.
