Dentist’s sweet deal for trick-or-treaters

While Halloween can be fun for the taste buds, one Calgary dentist is trying to ensure candy doesn’t claim kids’ teeth.

While Halloween can be fun for the taste buds, one Calgary dentist is trying to ensure candy doesn’t claim kids’ teeth.

Following the treat-filled holiday, Dr. Thom Evans and Evans Centre for Dental Health and Wellness will be holding the third annual Halloween Candy Buy Back. In addition to giving cash for candy, the dental centre is giving kids entries to win an iPod Nano as well as door prize entries for parents.

“Halloween should be a dental holiday, a dental celebration,” said Evans. “That sounds kind of silly but Halloween is a lot of fun ... The sad part is how much sugar is consumed.”

Evans said he was inspired to start the buy back when he met an American dentist who was doing the same thing.

“The first year we did it we collected about 350 pounds of candy,” he said, adding that last year the centre collected 900 pounds from local kids.

The candy buy back is on Nov. 1 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the dental centre located at the Market Mall professional building.
