Desjardins displays improved skills

Gabriel Desjardins must have had enough of being razzed for his shooting ability.

The soon-to-be 18-year-old winger buried four goals — sniping all of them in the top left corner with a lightning-quick release — to lift Team A to an 8-3 win over Team B in intrasquad action at Halifax Mooseheads training camp at Cole Harbour Place on Thursday night.

“Everyone always (jokes with me) that every time I shoot it’s always on the glass or off the net,” said Desjardins, who had 11 goals and 21 assists for 32 points in 62 games with the Herd last season.

“I worked hard at it this summer. After practice, 100 pucks, just shoot, shoot, shoot. I made sure my shot was ready.”

Competition for the final few forward spots began to heat up on Thursday. Scrappy rookie winger Luke Warner, for example, tried to make his case for a job by agitating his opponents and dropping the gloves with Garrett Clarke and Dylan McGuigan.

“Every rookie’s trying to get a spot on a team,” Desjardins said.

“It’s good competition.”
