Dexter avoids centre questions on Epstein

Premier Darrell Dexter shrugged off questions as to whether HowardEpstein will face discipline for breaking party ranks once again.

Premier Darrell Dexter shrugged off questions as to whether Howard Epstein will face discipline for breaking party ranks once again.

“I’m not going to discuss anything with respect to Mr. Epstein,” Dexter told reporters Thursday. “Those things are internal to caucus. If caucus decides they want to discuss it with him, they will.”

Epstein wrote an op-ed piece for The Chronicle Herald this week decrying the government’s decision to support the proposed trade and convention centre, calling the project too costly and too large.

Two weeks earlier, Epstein, a veteran NDP MLA for Halifax Chebucto, leaked the public price tag of the trade centre project to The Coast. He apologized to his colleagues, saying the $159-million figure inadvertently slipped out during the course of a longer conversation.

The apology was accepted.

Dexter reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the trade centre project.

“We’re looking to ensure Halifax assumes its rightful position as the capital of the Atlantic Region,” he said. “This decision has now been made. There are other decisions that need to be made, and we’re going to move on to those.”
