Toronto FC has scheduled a news conference for this morning amid speculation that all-time leading scorer Danny Dichio will announce he’s retiring to take on another role with the team.

The move by Dichio, a fan favourite since the inaugural season of 2007, would create space under the Major League Soccer salary cap for the team to make Scarborough’s Julian de Guzman its highest-paid player.

Sources last night confirmed negotiations continue between TFC and de Guzman, the 28-year-old Canadian international midfielder, who earlier this summer turned down a $2.75-million deal with the club.

A deal could be completed by week’s end for de Guzman to join TFC, which has six games remaining and sits only two points out of a tie for the first playoff berth in its three-year history.

Dichio, a former English Premier League player, will be forever linked with TFC by virtue of scoring the first goal in club history.
