Rescue divers were rushed to a north-end neighbourhood early yesterday morning, in search of passengers who had not made it out of an SUV after it was driven into a lake.
After blasting straight into a residential lake near Cumberland Road and 129 Street, the driver of the SUV swam to shore, where he told responding officers that there were several more people in the vehicle.
After rescue divers conducted a thorough search of the area and the vehicle was lifted from the water, it was determined that there had, in fact, not been any other occupants. The driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital for examination.
Investigators believe that drugs and alcohol were factors in the crash and have tested the driver for intoxication.
Charges are pending.
