Dog may be euthanized

Investigators with the B.C. SPCA planned to meet yesterday afternoon with the owner of a pit bull that mauled an 11-year-old boy in the playground of a Surrey elementary school.

“We’re going to try and get him to sign the dog over to be humanely euthanized,” said Lorie Chortyk, spokeswoman for the B.C. SPCA.
“It’s our opinion that this dog really shouldn’t be out in the community.”

However, she added, if the owner refuses to sign the animal over, the matter will be turned over to the City of Surrey, which could seek a court order to have the dog destroyed.

On Sunday, the nine-month-old male pit bull was let out of its yard by its owner’s roommate and mauled Sean Bajwa, 11, in the playground of Cedar Hills elementary school.

Bajwa was in surgery for three hours, receiving about 100 stitches to close bites.
