An 18-year-old male and his girlfriend have been charged with impaired driving of the same vehicle at the exact same time.
Police received a tip from an eyewitness who saw the pair driving erratically near the outskirts of Grande Prairie until their Dodge Ram pickup suddenly slid into the ditch.
When police arrived at the scene late last evening, they saw the 21-year-old woman sitting on the man’s lap in the driver’s seat while the truck’s wheels spun through the dirt.
Const. Amanda Daffner of the Grande Prairie RCMP said they both face charges since the pair were technically driving the truck simultaneously.
“When police arrived both people were actually in the driver’s seat so both were in a position to operate the vehicle,” she said.
It’s a rare charge, she added, since most double charges occur when a passenger and driver switch places after police pull them over.
“This one was a little different in that both parties were both in care and control of the vehicle pretty much at the same time,” she said.
Both accused face impaired driving charges and are scheduled to appear in court in September.
