Dragon boats make return to Calgary

Dragon Boat racing is back in town. On Saturday, 21 teams and 26 races will make for a full day of regatta glory at the Glenmore Reservoir.

“We’re so excited to have the event this year,” said Sandy Swanton with the Calgary Dragon Boat Racing Society, who expects a few hundred people will come out for the free, all-day festival.

It all begins at 7:30 a.m., with a traditional Chinese “eye dotting” ceremony.

The first race is at 8 a.m.; the last is at 4:40 p.m. In between, at 3 p.m., is a special breast cancer ceremony put on by the Sistership Dragon Boat Club.

“They asked to hold a small event to honour those associated with the Club who have both survived and succumbed to the disease,” she said.

Last year, “structural issues” kept the festival from happening, Swanton said.
