Drivers asked to slow down as students return

A Calgary principal is reminding motorists to slow down after many of his students returned to classes last week.

St. Joseph’s School principal Frank Durante said drivers have been good about slowing down in front of the northwest Calgary school that’s marked with year-round school zone signs.

“They’re pretty good in the community,” Durante said. “Our transportation department downtown, they do a great job in dealing with those types of issues in letting police officers know and the community know that school’s back in session at St. Joe’s.”

Students at five other Catholic schools in Calgary returned to classes as well last week, while 16 public schools will open their doors on Aug. 17.

St. Joseph’s is one of several schools in Calgary that offers a year-round, or modified, schedule for students, who get extended vacations at Christmas and Easter and two weeks off in October.
