Director: Danny Boyle
Stars: James Franco, Amber Tamblyn and Kate Mara
If you really think about it, this is a black comedy, although you definitely shouldn’t go to this Danny Boyle wonder expecting a yukfest. It’s often hard to watch, especially that scene where James Franco, playing Colorado adventurer Aron Ralston, is obliged to cut his arm off to escape an unyielding boulder.
All the same, if you have an appreciation for the cruel absurdities of life and the ability to rise above them, then 127 Hours is the ultimate Road Runner cartoon. Franco’s Ralston is a real-life Wile E. Coyote, trapped by a boulder made not by Acme Inc., but rather by the mischievous gods of fate. Boyle could have milked the scenario for maximum drama and pathos. He doesn’t shy away from the grim or visceral, but he’s never been one for cheap tears.
