A one-joke premise about a sperm-selling slacker forced to confront his own fertility gets a surprisingly moving treatment in this Quebec comedy by Ken Scott.

David Wozniak (Patrick Huard) is a good-time Charlie in Montreal whose good times seem about to end: the mob is after him for unpaid debts and his girlfriend Valérie is tired of his boyish antics. But his troubles really begin when a lawyer tells him he’s the father of 533 children, thanks to his highly saleable sperm. And now those kids are trying to identify the donor, who has been code-named Starbuck, after a gifted bull.

A set-up like this could be milked for cheap laughs. But Starbuck thankfully goes in more for hard-won home truths.
