Early morning fire destroys Calgary home

Three people jumped from the second-storey balcony to safety

Five occupants of a Douglas Woods View home awoke to the sound of a smoke detector shortly before 5:30 a.m. today.

All five people escaped to safety, three of whom jumped from the second-storey balcony, the Calgary Fire Department said.

Fire crews arrived to a street blanketed in smoke and quickly began an aggressive attack on the fire, but were later forced to go defensive.

The shell of the home is all that remains and no cause or dollar loss has been determined, the fire department said.

The Calgary Police arson unit has deemed the fire suspicious in nature.
