Early morning house fire claims family pet

Calgary firefighters investigating a house fire in the city's southwest early Thursday morning.

A house fire in the city’s southwest this morning has claimed the life of a pet cat.

Calgary fire crews responded to a call around 8:30 a.m. this morning in the 3100 block of 25th Avenue SW.

The fire originated in the basement but quickly spread to the main floor, said Calgary fire spokesperson Brian McAsey.

One male occupant in the house at the time was able to escape without incident, McAsey said.

“We’re very happy that the homeowner didn’t go back in to try to get the pet,” he added.

The fire’s cause as well as a total cost of damages is still under investigation.
