Two schools in the city’s east end were briefly placed in lockdown mode yesterday following reports of an armed man nearby.

East York Collegiate Institute and the East York Alternative School were locked down for about 90 minutes, according to Genna Schnurbach, a spokeswoman for the Toronto District School Board.

“Students and staff are safe,” Schnurbach said of both schools. “There is no activity inside the school.”

Police initiated the lockdowns on reports of an armed man in the area. After a thorough search, police found no one with a weapon, according to Sgt. Bruce Newman.

“Everyone’s safe in the area,” Newman said.
