Check out the sites and sounds of two Calgary southwest communities: Mount Royal and Cliff Bungalow-Mission.
Both share a long history within the city dating back to the early 1900s. Therefore, visitors can should stroll through the areas to take in historical buildings such as, St. Mary’s Parish Hall (141 19 Ave. S.W.), Sacred Heart Convent (225 19 Ave. S.W.) or the Robinson House (1923 10 St. S.W.).
Cliff Bunglow-Mission is the proud home-base for 4th Street and the upcoming Lilac Festival, which will take up 13 blocks of this trendy, restaurant- and shop-lined street.
“Fourth Street has lots of little treasures for all sorts of people,” says Jennifer Rempel executive director for the 4th Street Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ).
She mentions a new organic pet store that has a pot-bellied pig living within — Pawsitively Natural (18-2100 4 St. S.W.). She says the best part of the area is how walk-friendly it is, allowing people access to shopping, restaurants, furniture and more on foot.
Notable places to stop and eat or drink along 4th Street S.W. include Joyce on 4th Irish Pub (506 24th Ave S.W.), Nellie’s on 4th (2308 4 St. S.W.), Vin Room (2310 4 St. S.W.) and Sushi Kawa (2202 4 St. S.W.) just to name a few.
There are home furnishing shops, consignment stores, coffee shops and art galleries.
Cliff Bungalow-Mission community association president Bob Lang notes community events — movie and jazz nights — are slanted to the younger demographic who inhabit the area. The association’s website cliffbungalowmission.com lists upcoming events.
Mount Royal’s reputation is that it has many of Calgary’s most expensive and prestigious residences — some dating back a century and others completely new. It has established trees and greenery for residents and passers-by to enjoy on a nice pathway stroll.
The community is holding a family barbecue June 12 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. where members can eat hot dogs and hamburgers for free. See the community association’s website for more local events mountroyalstation.ca.
Talisman Centre (2225 Macleod Trail South), which has swimming, basketball, volleyball, various classes, a track and more, is not far from either community to take advantage of. Also, downtown and 17th Avenue are close-by, slightly north alternatives for those interested to shop, eat and play in.
