Late-night brawl in downtown restaurant

« It’s unknown whether there was that aspect of gang activity involved in this.»

A restaurant employee was rushed to hospital yesterday after he was shot in the leg during a brawl that overtook a downtown establishment.

Police say a fight broke out between two groups of people inside the Joey Tomato’s on Jasper Ave. and 112 St. before the restaurant’s manager and an off-duty police officer tried to intervene around 1 a.m. Wednesday.

As the two tried to break up the fight, someone fired a handgun and the bullet struck a staff member in the leg who was later treated in hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Staff at the restaurant declined to comment further on the incident when reached by phone yesterday.

When officers arrived on scene, all suspects had left — except someone who was found with injuries to his face, police said.

Police believe the injured man, who was found fleeing from the restaurant, was involved in the brawl.

Patricia Chalupczynska, an Edmonton police spokeswoman, says detectives are still trying to identify suspects and interview people who witnessed the fight.

"It’s unknown whether there was that aspect of gang activity involved in this," she said.

Police have yet to make any arrests in relation to the shooting. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police at 423-4567 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
