Economic gain won’t cover earth’s losses

Re: “Silver lining to global warming?” Jun. 15-17:

I was absolutely dumfounded and appalled by a comment by Prof. Robert Mendelsohn of the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies in which he states, “There will be —things like you’ll lose the polar bears. But the idea is that they (countries like Canada and Russia) will get such large gains, especially in agriculture, that they will be bigger than the losses.”

If this is an example of the quality of Yale’s teaching staff, then the ecological future of this planet is definitely in serious trouble!

What kind of message does this send? Sadly and shortsightedly it seems, economic gain at any price is more important than being good caretakers of the earth.

I trust that enough people see the folly of this limited thinking and join organizations such as the WWF and help prevent such a tragedy.
