Edmonton EI claims see sharp spike in ’08

New employment insurance figures from Statistics Canada are proving Alberta’s boom is clearly in the rearview mirror.

The federal government’s statistics agency says most large centres in Alberta between February 2008 and February 2009 have doubled EI levels.

Edmonton saw a 96.4 per cent jump in the number of employment insurance beneficiaries to 10,900 in a 12-month period, says Statistics Canada.

And the number of beneficiaries more than doubled in Calgary to 11,700, says Statistics Canada.

“In Alberta, the drop in employment in recent months was spread across a number of sectors, including construction, trade, manufacturing and professional, scientific and technical services,” said Statistics Canada in a report released yesterday.

Alberta, Ontario and British Columbia were among the hardest-hit in percentage terms, according to the most recent figures.
