Canada’s Annamay Pierse broke the world record in the women’s 200 metres breaststroke semifinals at the world championships on Thursday.
Pierse clocked 2:20.12 to better American Rebecca Soni’s Beijing Olympic effort of 2:20.22.
Pierse grew up in Edmonton and is now based in Vancouver. She set a short-course world record for the same event in March in Toronto, swimming it in 2:17.50.
