Edmonton expat sets new world record

Canada’s Annamay Pierse broke the world record in the women’s 200metres breaststroke semifinals at the world championships on Thursday.

Canada’s Annamay Pierse broke the world record in the women’s 200 metres breaststroke semifinals at the world championships on Thursday.

Pierse clocked 2:20.12 to better American Rebecca Soni’s Beijing Olympic effort of 2:20.22.

Pierse grew up in Edmonton and is now based in Vancouver. She set a short-course world record for the same event in March in Toronto, swimming it in 2:17.50.
