What started as an environmental “teach-in” in April, 1970, has since turned into what we now have come to know as Earth Day, which officially falls on April 22 every year.
Locally, however, the real Earth Day excitement doesn’t get started until the following weekend. On Saturday, April 25, Edmonton will see its two newest LRT Stations (McKernan-Belgravia Station at 76 Avenue and 114 Street and South Campus Station at 65 Avenue and 116 Street) open for service.
To mark the opening of Edmonton’s latest LRT extension, ETS will be holding a Community Fair at the Saville Gymnasium adjacent to South Campus Station, featuring information on new service changes and plans for future LRT expansion. Oh, and how could I forget to mention the most important part — the free LRT service between Clareview Station and the new South Campus Station from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m.
On Sunday, April 26, at Hawrelak Park the official Edmonton Earth Day Festival will be taking place from noon until 6 p.m. You can catch the route 128 from either University, Westmount or Castle Downs Transit Centre. The event will feature live music, family activities, a mini-tent display of some of the city’s environmental departments as well as exhibitors from environment groups including several transit groups.
The Transit Riders’ Union of Edmonton, Citizens for Better Transit and the Edmonton Trolley Coalition are all expected to have tables at the event.
