Edmonton Police Chief Mike Boyd announced his intention to step down as chief of police at the end of the year in a hastily assembled press conference Tuesday afternoon.
“Serving this great organization and the citizens of Edmonton has been one of the proudest accomplishments of my career,” said Chief Boyd. “My decision to leave was not easy.”
Chief Boyd was hired as Edmonton’s police chief in 2006 and his contract was renewed in 2008 for a three-year term. The Edmonton Police Commission was pursuing another three-year contract with Boyd when he let it be known he would be leaving at the end of 2010 for family reasons.
By contract, Boyd is required to give the Edmonton Police Commission three months notice. He will continue to lead the EPS for the rest of the year while the search for a new chief gets underway.
The Commission will utilize an executive search firm to identify potential candidates from within the Edmonton Police Service and from other police agencies across Canada.
