The buildup to the Vancouver Olympics is off to the races and Doreen Ryan will be too, as Edmonton’s final torchbearer when the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games Torch Relay comes on Jan. 13.

The official announcement was made by Mayor Stephen Mandel at city hall yesterday. Doreen Ryan, a 78-year-old lifetime Edmonton resident, has a rich history with the Olympic Games as a two-time speed skater competitor, track coach and supporter.

For Ryan, the privilege is one that coincides with the great milestones of her life.

“I feel so honoured to be asked to carry the Olympic torch,” said Ryan yesterday. “This is right up there with … having a little corner of Edmonton named … in my honour.”
