Elderly man shot by home invader

An elderly man is in hospital after being shot and stabbed in what appears to have been a targeted home invasion in Chilliwack, RCMP said yesterday.

The 72-year-old victim was attacked after answering the door to his 5th Avenue home on Tuesday evening.

“A male suspect knocked on the victim’s door and presented a gun,” said Cpl. Lea-Anne Dunlop. “The victim and suspect struggled, and the victim was subsequently shot and stabbed.”

The suspect ran off on foot and police were unable to track him down.

“Information has surfaced that now lead investigators to believe that the suspect involved had intention to target the residence in question,” Dunlop said.

She said while the victim claims he didn’t know his attacker, police don’t believe it was a random attack.

“The investigation is still focused on gathering further information from the public that will help determine why the residence in question was targeted, and who the suspect responsible for this crime is,” Dunlop said.

Anyone with information is asked to call police or, if they wish to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers.

“Even seemingly small information can prove to be very valuable,” said Dunlop.
