Contemporary design comes to life at FirstHome Destination Drive to create a model suite that shows off how much harmony can be achieved between modern and traditional designs.
Built by The Daniels Corporation and situated at the corner of Winston Churchill Boulevard and Destination Drive, the development features condominium suites and townhomes designed with first-time homebuyers clearly in mind.
Stephanie Dimopoulos, director of decor at The Daniels Corporation, says the goal with the 812-square-foot one bedroom plus den model suite was to showcase the best principles of contemporary design.
“Contemporary is a mix of modern and traditional. It keeps in line with the whole feel of a clean space, mixed with a little bit of softness from the traditional side,” Dimopoulos said.
Neutral tones, particularly browns ranging from espresso tones to creamy chocolate shades dominate the space to keep things simple and clean, with delicate splashes of colour peppered throughout on elements like artwork and cushions to keep the overall design feeling warm and inviting.
Dimopoulos says a neutral colour base can actually lead to a more sophisticated and striking overall effect.
“You need to be able to introduce some colour into a space but it can be very overwhelming when you’re hit with the sensory overload of too much colour. We’ve kept things somewhat neutral so those hints of colour elevate the space and create some visual interest,” Dimopoulos said.
In the kitchen, caramel tones in the floor tiles served as a basis for tonal choices while in the bedroom bright whites and intelligent accessory choices make the most of natural light entering the room.
“We’ve brightened up the space by keeping things quite light. The lamps, having glass bases, don’t take up any visual space — it’s almost like they’re weightless,” Dimopoulos said.
