Emily Carr gets Current

The first issue of an academic journal produced by undergraduate students at Emily Carr University of Art and Design will be launching next Tuesday.

The inaugural edition of the publication, called Current, is the first of its kind among art institutions in Canada.

“Currently in the university landscape of art schools, there is no journal talking about design and the design process,” said Emily Carr sessional faculty member Brooke Allen. “There are professional journals that talk about it but there isn’t any that come from the other art institutions in Canada.”

The Current will feature articles on different themes pertaining to the design process.

It will focus on changing the simplistic view some people may have on the design concept, said Allen.

“What we wanted to do was start to illustrate the process of what happens in between (the design process),” said Allen, the overseer of the entire project who also acts as the official art director. “It isn’t just this magical process where we instantly produce something wonderful, there are these series of steps that we go through to create the best possible solution.”

“We go through research, prototyping and testing and hopefully provide design with more value,” said Allen.

The Current is edited, designed, produced and distributed by undergrad students in communications design, with articles contributed by other Emily Carr students, alumni and faculty.

Although Allen oversaw the project, she said that it was “the students who put it all together.”

Allen hopes that the Current can change the misconception some people may have on Emily Carr as a university.

“I was a student there, and there was always this misconception that it’s just an art school, but it’s an academic university and that’s really what we’re trying to show with this publication,” said Allen. “To put out such a publication like this really contributes validation to the university.”

The 48-page journal will be available in print and online on April 20th.
