Entertaining on a dime

Even without valet service, waiters or laminated menus, your home can be the perfect dinner destination.

“It’s possible to entertain guests without breaking the bank,” said Corbin Tomaszeski, executive chef at Holt’s Café, speaking at the National Home Show.

Taking the stage with Cheryl Torrenueva, fellow host of HGTV’s Restaurant Makeover, the duo showed audience members how to plan a classy affair with limited funds.

Look like a big spender
With less money, your table can still look like a million bucks. Swanky-looking supplies can be found at bargain basement prices.

“If it doesn’t look expensive, don’t touch it,” said Torrenueva who visited a dollar store for plastic wine flutes instead of crystal ones.

Prep for success
Budgets aren’t just for bank accounts. When throwing a soiree, time is of the essence.

Serve with style
Forget champagne fountains and five-piece bands. When throwing a fancy fete, it’s the little things that count.

“Whether it’s with a garnish, place cards or napkin rings — just put some effort into details,” said Torrenueva.

Serve dinner on square plates, she suggested. The unconventional shape is a chic and cost-effective way to enhance dinner.

Stimulate the senses
Conversation isn’t the only thing guests should participate in. Setting atmosphere at a dinner party involves engaging all five senses.

“When putting a dish together, look at texture, colour and aroma,” said Tomaszeski, warning not to use scented candles, the smell might overpower the meal.

Choose forgiving food
Culinary rookies can still hold a dinner party without the threat of a botched meal.

“Make dishes that are forgiving,” said Tomaszeski, suggesting prime-rib and salmon. “The higher the fat content the longer you can cook it without it drying out.”

Pick crowd-pleasers
While guests might not always agree with your gourmet experiments, some dinner party staples never go out of style.

“You can get some really decent wine for $10,” said Tomaszeski. “I try to refrain from the ones in the shape of a cat or in a box.”

Make it personal
Custom playlists, place cards and individual floral arrangements are amongst many ways a large gathering can become more intimate. Dinner parties are enjoyable when hosts key into their guests’ interests.
