EnviroCentre opens new digs

Even 10 years ago, it was difficult to find environmentally friendly services in eastern Ontario, said an EnviroCentre staffer.

After a decade in Ottawa, EnviroCentre held a grand opening for its new location at city hall yesterday.

The dedicated space will increase the visibility of the non-profit organization, said Andrew Cole, manager of commercial energy services at the EnviroCentre.

“We’re showcasing energy-efficient technology, like LED strip lights and LED pot lights, which you don’t see very often,” said Cole.

In addition to retailing hard-to-find energy-efficient goods, EnviroCentre also provides services to low-income households, said Cole.

“We can make sure that Ottawa and eastern Ontario have the same access to services that the city of Toronto or the GTA would have,” he said.

“As a rule, people of Ottawa are quite environmentally aware … there’s an opportunity for more action.”

A recent poll indicated “the majority of Ottawa (residents) really support energy efficiency and want to be proactive,” said EnviroCentre chair Steve Koch.
