Environmental concerns surrounding Alberta’s oilsands will be at the top of the conversation topic list when Premier Ed Stelmach has a face-to-face meeting with U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi today.
“The purpose of the meeting is to get the energy-producing premiers together,” Stelmach said, prior to leaving for the nation’s capital. “Our goal there is to appeal to her sense of reason, to communicate very clearly that we are continuing to focus on environmental improvement in developing the oilsands.”
The premier said he will also be talking to Pelosi about job opportunities in the oilsands as well as energy security and tax revenue generated by the oilsands. The dinner meeting will be Stelmach’s first opportunity to meet with the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
“The information that we will communicate will be the same as done with other elected officials in the United States,” Stelmach said. “This will be an opportunity to talk about our position in terms of continually improving the environment as we develop the oilsands.”
