Eskasoni woman guilty of torching father’s home

A 27-year-old Eskasoni woman has been sentenced to two years in a federal prison after pleading guilty to setting her father’s home on fire while he was inside.

Esther Maria Mae Bernard is also to complete a one-year probation period after her release and is banned from possessing firearms for 10 years.

She pleaded guilty to charges of arson, breaching a court order and assault with a weapon, a barbell.

The court was told that Bernard and her father, John, had become embroiled in an argument during which the pair threw things at each other. Esther Bernard then set fire to the bathroom.

Fearing her father would be harmed, she helped him escape by placing a ladder under his bedroom window.
