Three teenage exchange students from China missing since Tuesday never intended to reunite with their school group at Woodbine Beach, police said yesterday.

“We’re shedding some light on the fact that it had been planned — that the three had decided not to meet back with the group,” Const. Wendy Drummond said. “We can’t get into where that information comes from … but we have evidence that it was planned.”

When asked whether Zhiyong Chen, 17, Qian Hu, 15, and Kangjun Fu, 13, might have taken off to claim refugee status, Drummond said she could not comment on what the students’ motives were.

The three Mandarin-speaking teenagers arrived from Changsha City, Hunan Province, on July 7 for a four-week ESL program run by the Toronto District School Board.
