DUBLIN – The European Union urged Ireland to adopt an austerity budget on time to unlock promised EU/IMF funding, in response to a deepening political crisis that could derail the rescue.

Dublin’s government is on a knife-edge. The small leftist Sinn Fein party submitted a motion of no confidence in Prime Minister Brian Cowen, though the party lacks the required signatories.
