Event celebrates black history

Calgary’s urban scene is on the rise and wants to get citizens involved.

Ify Chiwetelu is a founding member of Collectively Eclectic, a non-profit organization striving to promote creativity and cross-cultural experiences by giving local artistic talent a stage.

The organization is holding an event called Legacies 2010 Shades of Black this Saturday in honour of Black History Month.

“No history is created in a vacuum, and therefore we don’t feel it should be celebrated in one either,” said Chiwetelu.

“Black history is an important part of Canadian history, and we feel it is important to showcase and celebrate that through local talent.”

The event will unite people from all races and showcase music, art, fashion, dance, and black history contributions.

The event is for ages 18 and over and will be held at the Chinese Cultural Centre from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Tickets are available at Joycee’s Caribbean Foods, 100% Legit Hiphop & Casual Clothing, and at www.ce-calgary.com.
