LAVAL, Que. - There are several reports that a former Montreal police officer who tried to sell confidential information to the Mafia has committed suicide.
The reports say the man was found in a hotel in Laval, north of Montreal.
Laval police are not confirming the death but are saying they did receive a 911 call from a hotel this morning.
One Montreal newspaper published the name of a man this morning they described as the mole.
Montreal's police chief held a news conference on Tuesday and promised swift action after reports the retired officer tried to sell information on informants to the Mafia.
Marc Parent said the 33-year veteran of the force worked in the intelligence unit and was one of a handful of people who had access to a confidential list of names.
The man had not been charged and the alleged offences occurred after his retirement in January 2011.
